Spicy Crispy Lemon Tofu

Step 1 - Set oven to 375 F

Step 2 - Press your extra firm tofu:

This can be done by placing a generous amount of paper towels above and below the tofu on a plate and by putting a heavy object to rest on top of it for about 20 minutes. Once done, cut the tofu into desired size pieces. I cut mine into 8 equal sized pieces.

Step 3 - Get your bowls ready:

Bowl 1:

  • 1/4 cup of white flour
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

Bowl 2:

  • 3/4 cup Vegan Panko (some may contain eggs).

Step 3 - Cover that tofu up!:

Take each piece of tofu and dip in bowl 1 followed by bowl 2. Put each piece on a baking sheet. Once all tofu's have been dunked and are now coated with panko, put in the oven and cook for 22 minutes. Take out of oven, flip each piece and cook for another 22 minutes.

Meanwhile, while tofu is baking...

Step 4 - Prepare Spicy Lemon Sauce;

  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1/3 cup + 2 TBSP of veggie broth
  • 3 TBSP soy sauce
  • 1/2 TBSP minced garlic
  • 1 tsp crushed chillies
  • 2 TBSP coconut sugar
  • 1 TBSP agave
  • 1.5 TBSP arrowroot starch
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • Pinch of salt & pepper

Mix all of the above ingredients in a bowl with a whisk. Leave off to the side until crispy tofu is finished cooking.

Once tofu is finished, transfer the sauce into a sauce pan and whisk on medium to low heat until it starts to thicken. Once it starts to thicken remove from the hot burner and add the crispy tofu. Add a few pieces of tofu at a time to coat the surface with the lemon sauce. I ended up transferring my tofu and lemon sauce into a large frying pan as it made it easier to coat each piece with the lemon sauce.

Once each piece is coated either serve right away or portion it into Tupperware for  lunches, dinners or both! 😂

Best pairing? Rice & broccoli and/or edamame beans. Asparagus would be alright too. Top with green onion or chives and sesame seeds. Enjoy!!!
